Reading and Writing I is designed to help students further develop their reading comprehension and writing skills. During this six-week session, students will . . .

  • Review and apply rules of grammar.

  • Read, reflect upon, and discuss poems and short passages.

  • Compose brief responses to literature.

  • Exercise their public speaking skills.

Each section is limited to 6 students. The class will meet weekly for 1.5 hours. Students must complete their weekly assignments to fully participate in each class and stay on pace.

During this six-week session, each student will write a short story. Lessons will include elements of a short story; brainstorming, selecting, and narrowing a topic; developing characters, incorporating dialogue, and painting a picture with words.

Reading and Writing II is like a book club in which students read the same novel, share their insights with each other, and write an essay. During this eight-week session, students will . . .

  • Read a novel.

  • Identify literary elements

  •  Analyze the period in which the novel is set and/or was published

  • Discuss the author’s intent

  • Write an essay about the novel.

  • Respond to a prompt.

  • Prewrite, compose, and revise.

  • Include citations.

  • Prepare and deliver a final presentation.

Each section is limited to 6 students. The class will meet weekly for 1.5 hours. Students are expected to complete their weekly assignments to fully participate in each class and stay on pace. Each session of Reading and Writing II will cover a different novel, and the type of essay that the students write may vary by session.
